5-Day & 10-Day Short-Term Recovery Program

Pause. Understand. Experience. Decide.

Less Content. More Reflection.

Monday–Friday  |  8:30 AM–5:00 PM
A Gentle First Step

Sometimes recovery begins with a pause — not a long-term commitment

Sometimes, the first step toward recovery does not need to begin with a long-term commitment. Akari's 5-Day and 10-Day Short-Term Recovery Program is designed to provide a calm, structured introduction to recovery.

Rather than filling each day with continuous therapeutic activities, the program gives participants time to slow down, adjust to the environment, reflect on what they are experiencing, build trust with the team, understand personal challenges, and learn a small number of practical recovery tools.

The goal is simple: less pressure, more reflection, and a clearer next step.

A note on what this program is. The short-term program is a structured introduction to recovery and a way for clients and families to better understand the next appropriate step. It is not intended to achieve full recovery within 5 or 10 days — recovery is an ongoing journey, and this is a thoughtful beginning.

Program Schedule
Monday–Friday  |  8:30 AM–5:00 PM

The program combines structured sessions with meaningful breaks, personal time, reflection, coaching, and light wellness activities.

Participants are not expected to remain continuously occupied throughout the day. Rest, quiet reflection, journaling, walking, informal interaction, and simply becoming comfortable within the Akari environment are considered important parts of the short-term experience.

Accommodation Arrangements

Our team can assist with accommodation arrangements, where available, to help clients conveniently attend their scheduled IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) activities.

The 5-Day Program

Five days to understand where you are now

The 5-Day Program gives participants time to understand where they are now, recognise important patterns, explore practical coping strategies, and consider what their next step may be.

1Day

Arrive & Settle

"Where am I now?"

The first day is intentionally light. Participants are welcomed to Akari, introduced to the team and daily routine, and guided through a simple initial assessment. The focus is on settling into the environment, identifying current concerns, and beginning to reflect on what brought the participant to Akari.

2Day

Understand

"Understanding my patterns."

The second day focuses on recognising personal triggers and behavioural patterns. Participants explore triggers, cravings, stress, emotional reactions, and habitual behaviours. The aim is to begin understanding what may happen before control is lost or an unhealthy behaviour returns.

3Day

Respond Differently

"What can I do when things become difficult?"

Participants begin exploring practical coping strategies for difficult situations and emotions. Topics may include cravings, stress, anxiety, anger, loneliness, and impulsive behaviour. Participants are encouraged to identify a small number of realistic strategies that they may be able to use in everyday life.

4Day

My Environment

"What around me helps or hurts my recovery?"

Recovery is influenced not only by the individual, but also by relationships, surroundings and support systems. Day 4 explores supportive people, high-risk relationships, healthy and high-risk environments, communication, boundaries, and asking for help. Where appropriate, a family consultation may also be scheduled.

5Day

Review & Decide

"What should I do next?"

The final day of the 5-Day Program is designed to be calm and reflective. Participants review what they learned, what helped them, what remains difficult, and what concerns them about returning to everyday life. Together with the Recovery Coach, the participant creates a simple recovery plan focused on key risks, support systems, and practical next actions.

Possible next steps may include

  • Completing the 5-Day Program
  • Extending for another five days
  • Continuing into a longer Akari program
  • Continuing with outpatient or aftercare support
  • Following another recommended care pathway where appropriate

The purpose is to help the participant make an informed next-step decision — not to pressure them into a longer program.

The 10-Day Program

A second week to practise and prepare

The 10-Day Program includes the first five days and continues into a second week. Week 2 is not simply about adding more sessions. It gives participants additional time to practise what was introduced during the first week, review their progress, and prepare more realistically for life after the program.

6Day

Review & Reset

"What did I notice during Week 1?"

Participants review the first week, revisit their personal goals, and identify the most important issue to focus on during the second week.

7Day

Emotional Regulation

"Managing difficult emotions."

Participants explore simple ways to respond to emotions such as stress, anger, anxiety, and frustration. The focus is on practical application rather than introducing too many new techniques.

8Day

Support & Relationships

"Who will support me?"

Participants explore healthy relationships, communication, boundaries, and asking for support. Where clinically and practically appropriate, a family session may also be included.

9Day

Preparing for Real Life

"What could go wrong after I leave?"

Participants begin preparing for possible challenges after the program. The session may cover warning signs, high-risk situations, people to contact, and actions to take. Participants develop a simple emergency recovery plan that is practical and easy to use.

10Day

My Next 30 Days

"What happens from tomorrow?"

The final day focuses on preparing a realistic plan for the next 30 days. This may include daily routines, recovery support, healthy activities, family and social support, and follow-up sessions where appropriate. The Akari team then discusses the participant's progress, remaining concerns, support needs, and recommended next steps.

Family Involvement

Recovery is supported at home, too

Where appropriate, family involvement may be included as part of the program. A family consultation can provide an opportunity to discuss communication, support, boundaries, and the participant's recovery environment.

Family sessions are scheduled when clinically and practically appropriate — and are not added simply to fill the daily schedule.

What Happens After the Program?

A clearer understanding of the next step

The short-term program is intended to help participants gain greater clarity about their situation and consider the next appropriate step. Depending on the individual situation, this may involve:

Completing the short-term program
Extending the program
Continuing into a longer Akari program
Outpatient or aftercare support
Another recommended care pathway

The goal is not to force a decision. It is to help the participant leave the program with a clearer understanding of:

Leaving with clarity

"Where am I now?"

"What have I learned?"

"What needs to change?"

"What should I do next?"
